Review of "Hidden Pond" from PERFORMING SONGWRITER March/April '05.
"Hidden Pond", the debut release by guitarist-songwriter David Coe, is an all-instrumental, acoustic-based treasure. The album showcases not only his fluid, expressive playing on all kinds of stringed instruments, but also his strong sense of melody as well as compositional and orchestral dynamics. The title track, which starts off with some intricate, James Taylor-like fingerpicking, sets the stage for an uplifting hook that builds in intensity before segueing back to the opening theme. If you're a fan of phenomenal guitar playing, check out Coe's brilliant arpeggiated cross-picking on "True Divided Light", or his soulful nylon string workout on "Sun Haven". Whether you're a guitar freak or simply a fan of good music, once you hear this breathtaking release, you're going to find yourself playing it again and again. - RP

ACM: Which 3 tracks are your favorites and why?
DC: "Hidden Pond", "Tuckahoe Road" and "Bright Sky Blue". I'm happy with the
composition of these three steel string guitar pieces and also with the way they
came to life during the recording process.
ACM: How did you work on "Hidden Pond"?
DC: I wrote the pieces at home and recorded them at my friend Michael Terry's
studio in Trumbull CT. ( The Music Lab). We first put down a complete guitar
track and then added the other instruments and sounds as we felt they were
needed. I'm very happy with the results !
ACM: Are you a full time musician?
DC: I am and always have been a full time musician. I've done a lot of
performing ( in the NY area and as far away as Dublin, Ireland and Maui - I'd like to
go back there if someone is looking for a guitar player !) and recording with
artists as varied as James Brown, the Temptations Peter Criss ( from Kiss)
and Rex Fowler ( of Aztec TwoStep).
ACM: Tell us about yourself.
DC: I have a degree in Music Education and along with my performing schedule, I
devote a lot of time to teaching guitar. I currently have a full roster of
private students and am on the faculty of Fairfield University. I have two
method books published by Mel Bay Publications - "Guitarists Treasury Of Classic
Themes" and "Building Guitar Speed".
ACM: Who are your admired musicians?
DC: I enjoy listening to artists like Pat Metheny ( his new record "The Way
Up" is awesome !), James Taylor and the Beatles. I think you can hear their
influence on my CD.
ACM: Are you currently working on a new album?
DC: I'm writing music for a new project that will feature my son Zac ( he's 13
and a great musician !) on drums and percussion as well as some acoustic and
electric guitar playing on my part.
